Some dinner plans begin with a craving. This one begins with a building Birmingham residents will recognize.

Big Rock Italian Chophouse occupies the historic Grand Trunk Railway Station at 245 South Eton Street, pairing the old depot’s identity with an Italian menu and a full steakhouse offering.

For anyone who has been meaning to see what the place looks like in its current chapter, a dinner reservation gives that curiosity a destination.

It is also an option for the group that splits between “I want pasta” and “I want steak.” The menu makes room for both.

Start with the pasta page

The restaurant’s current menu includes carbonara at $26, butternut squash tortelloni at $29 and truffle goat cheese ravioli at $32.

Those are listed menu prices checked October 4, not a promise that prices will stay fixed. They give a useful starting point for deciding whether this is a casual evening or a celebration dinner.

The squash tortelloni comes with Parmesan cream, Marcona almonds and Brussels leaves. It is an autumn-minded combination to investigate if the season has you choosing richer dinners.

Rigatoni Bolognese and lasagna are other options for diners leaning toward something familiar. Steakhouse selections sit alongside seafood and Italian main dishes.

A different way to try it

The posted happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 4–6 p.m., with $5 off appetizers and cocktails, $10 selected wines by the glass and half-price beer.

That could make an early weekday visit appealing if you want to experience the restaurant before planning a larger dinner. Ask the restaurant where the offer applies and which selections qualify.

An appetizer and a drink create a different outing from a multi-course meal. Choose the version that fits your evening rather than assuming a steakhouse visit requires a steak.

The bar menu also lists its Rock Burger with wagyu, cambozola and tomato jam. It is another option to consider when the group wants something less elaborate.

Leave a little room for dessert

The dessert menu lists tiramisu at $15, lemon cake at $16 and stracciatella cheesecake at $14.

For the friend who considers dessert the real reason to go out, there is enough choice to begin negotiations before dinner. Decide after the main course whether everyone wants their own selection or something to share.

The restaurant’s exterior is part of the occasion, too. Its official photographs show the recognizable depot building rather than a generic dining room.

Make the reservation

Big Rock lists service beginning at 4 p.m., with later closing times on Fridays and Saturdays. Use its booking link or call 248-275-0888 for current availability.

Tell the restaurant about dietary needs directly and check the latest menu when reserving.

For a birthday, an early date night or simply a visit to a familiar Birmingham landmark in a new role, this is an evening with a clear place to begin.

The Grand Trunk Railway Station is a good reason to be curious about the space. I would like to see what the dining room looks like now.

The old Grand Trunk station is a good reason to be curious about Big Rock. I would check the current menu before making a reservation.
